"Quarantined" and sequels

(Please also see "By Chance or Purpose", listed in The Fellowship of the Ring section below, which was the original sequel to "Quarantined")

Quarantined Golden Mushroom Awards 2003 winner Middle Earth Fanfiction Award
Late one night, Gandalf brings a very ill Ranger to the closest refuge, Bag End, knowing that Bilbo is immune to this illness -- but Gandalf is unaware that a tweenager is now living there. An AU look at Frodo's early life with Bilbo; how he met Gandalf; and the "chance meeting" which inspired Aragorn's dedication to the safeguarding of the Shire.

Reflections of the Past
Sequel to "Quarantined". A new addition to Bag End brings unexpected delight for tweenaged Frodo, minor headaches for young Sam, and the discovery of an artifact from the First Age that astonishes Aragorn.

Estel's Birthday
Sequel to "Reflections of the Past". Mix together one puppy, one Tookish toddler, tween Frodo, a young gardener, and Bilbo. Add an unsuspecting Ranger who's about to have a birthday. Pure, unapologetic fluff.

Comfort and Joy
Aragorn makes a Yuletide visit to Bag End, bearing a special gift from a certain wizard. A one-chapter sequel to "Estel's Birthday", offered as a holiday ficlet. Starring Frodo, Aragorn, Bilbo, toddler Pippin, and... Scamp. No angst, just fluff and happiness.

A Hobbity Halloween
A teensy bit o' hobbity Halloween fluff featuring Aragorn, Frodo, and wee!Pippin. Aragorn visits Bag End just in time for Halloween.

Force of Nature - PG Golden Mushroom Awards 2005 winner
Aragorn finds that he needs assistance from Frodo, young Merry, and Scamp to locate a Ranger lost in the Old Forest. But the rescue has an unexpected outcome; the trees have a message for Aragorn, and a strange accident makes Frodo the only one who can deliver it. Characters also include Bilbo and Halbarad.

A Letter Home
A teensy holiday ficlet for Yule 2005 from my "Quarantined" universe. This scene occurs after the events in "Force of Nature" -- and assumes that Aragorn has now met Bilbo, young Frodo, Merry, Sam, and wee Pip. Love and fluff!

When the King Comes Back
Frodo and Aragorn are injured in an explosion, leaving Bilbo, Halbarad, and the Gamgees with some unexpected challenges and decisions. Fluff, angst, puppies... The usual!

The Vault of Annuminas
Was it only a dream, or has Frodo glimpsed an ancient secret? Join Frodo, Aragorn, and Elladan on a journey to the ruins of Annuminas, to uncover the truth. Characters also include Bilbo, Sam, and Scamp.

The following stories for FOTR, TTT, and ROTK are listed in chronological order as they would fall within the framework of the Trilogy.

Pre-Quest, and The Fellowship of the Ring

Fond Memories
A Hobbity Halloween ficlet. Four-year-old Frodo is visiting Bag End with his parents just before All Hallow's Eve. Warnings for fluff and movie-verse Frodo description. Characters are Bilbo, Frodo, and Primula.

Discoveries
Short, unrelated scenes highlighting sweet moments between Frodo and young Sam. One: "Discoveries", in which the lads enjoy a cold winter's day. Two: "Baby Talk", in which Frodo and Bilbo look after wee!Sam.

In Innocent Hands
Gandalf sees something quite unexpected while visiting Bag End. A teensy ficlet written for Waymeet's Livejournal 2006 "Yuletide" challenge. Featuring Gandalf, Bilbo, Frodo, and wee!Pippin.

A Magical Day
Frodo takes Merry and Pippin camping, and introduces Pippin to the magic that just might be all around them -- for those willing to see, and believe. Frodo is 28, Merry is 14, and Pippin is 6. A fluffy pre-Quest cousinfic.

The Island
Nine people (two Men, one Dwarf, one wizard, one Elf, and four hobbits) have crash landed on a seemingly deserted -- and possibly mysterious -- island. This is your basic "stranded on a perilous island" tale, starring the Fellowship of the Ring -- who will meet, bond, and face danger together. This story was inspired by the television show "Lost", but no knowledge of the show is required.

Elementary, My Dear Gandalf
Concealed in the shadows during the Birthday Party, Aragorn accepts Gandalf's challenge to identify a certain hobbit.

Master of Bag End
After Bilbo vanishes from the Birthday Party, and Gandalf leaves, Frodo tries to comprehend how his life has so suddenly changed. Over one memorable year, Merry, Pippin, and Sam help Frodo adjust to his role as Master of Bag End. Some angst, but mostly lighthearted. (Movieverse, interwoven with a bit of book-canon)

Spellbound - PG 13 Middle Earth Fanfiction Award
What are the Barrow-wights? Why did the wight tell Frodo that they were "waiting" for him? What did it plan for the hobbits, and why? How were the hobbits lured up to the Great Barrow? What explains why Frodo was treated differently than the other hobbits, awakened sooner, and found the strength to resist the call of the Ring in such a desperate situation? This story is my own look at the events on the Barrow-downs from the FOTR chapter 'The Fog on the Barrow-downs'. The PG-13 rating is for serious themes, consistent with canon.

By Chance or Purpose - PG 13
The original sequel to "Quarantined". The journey taken by the hobbits and Aragorn from Bree to Rivendell. If the bond between Frodo and Aragorn from "Quarantined" had been set up before the hobbits met Strider in Bree, how might this fateful journey have been different?

And the Halfling Forth Shall Stand
In Rivendell, Frodo thinks about who might have volunteered to be the Ring-bearer had he died of his wound. (vignette)

A Matter of Time
Why did Elrond choose Legolas and Gimli to accompany Frodo and Sam on their journey south? And what influenced his decision to let Pippin go with them? Merry gets a surprising answer.

The Breaking Point
Ten days out from Rivendell, Frodo has finally had enough of the bickering between Legolas and Gimli. Somewhat lighthearted, especially at the end. (This is the first fanfic I ever wrote, in May 2002 -- it's short, it's rough, and I was so excited to be writing LOTR fanfiction I could hardly type straight. Remember your very first story?)

Havoc in Hollin
Somewhere in Hollin, at long last, the Fellowship's questions are answered: CAN Gandalf turn someone into something else? And, given enough provocation... WOULD he? A fun, lighthearted ficlet with contributions by Budgielover, Kit5, and many others!

Avalanche Golden Mushroom Awards 2003 winner
An avalanche on Caradhras leaves Frodo hurt and Pippin in shock. The Company tries to help Pippin regain his shattered courage, but it is Frodo who finds the key. Meanwhile, Boromir seeks to understand his place in the Fellowship, and Legolas learns that he has made an unusual connection to the Ring-bearer.

Unlikely Comfort - PG
Between Moria and Lorien, Legolas and Aragorn help Frodo through the shock of Gandalf's death. The healing doesn't stop there, however, as before the group reaches Lorien, bonding and healing have taken place throughout the Fellowship, in quite unexpected ways. (AU, in that the distance between Moria and Lorien is slightly greater than in canon, and, as the story begins, neither Frodo nor Sam were hurt in Moria; therefore, the mithril shirt is still a secret.)

Leaving Lorien
The thoughts of each member of the Fellowship as they awaken on their last morning in Lorien. Eight mini-chapters, one per character. Book-canon.

Whispers of the Dragon Middle Earth Fanfiction Award
This is my AU imagining of the Fellowship's journey down the Anduin between Lorien and Amon Hen. The story occurs during the same ten days as in FOTR, but with a few side-adventures and revelations along the way. A bit of FrodoHealing, a bit of PippinHealing, some tricksy Saruman, Fellowship bonding, riddles, teasing, danger, and a deeper look into how the Ring slowly went to work on the Steward's noble son. No sex, slash, or profanity. Almost completely based on book-verse.

The Two Towers

The Ways Appointed To Us
At Henneth Annun while Frodo and Sam sleep, Faramir contemplates the powerful call of the Ring and the decision he must make. Three short chapters: Faramir's POV; a short time earlier (Sam's POV); and still earlier (Frodo's POV).

At the Black Gate - PG
A short dramatization of a scene from the film "The Two Towers". When Sam was trapped in debris in front of the Black Gate, what were he and Frodo thinking and feeling? And how did Frodo know that the Elven cloak would shield them?

Reunion at Isengard
Merry and Pippin's reaction after Gandalf has come and gone from Isengard. A gentle, lighthearted look at the aftermath of this unexpected reunion.

The Return of the King

Shelter
I posted this 'shirebunny' on LiveJournal, and then couldn't stop thinking about it: Frodo, Sam, and Pippin recovered at Cormallen from late March to early April; surely the springtime weather in Ithilien wasn't blissfully perfect every day. Perhaps there was a day or two of rain, wind, colder-than-usual air... What was done to ensure that the hobbit heroes were kept warm, dry, and comfortable? Characters include Pippin, Aragorn, Gimli, Frodo, Merry, Legolas, Gandalf, Sam, and Beregond.

In the Keeping of the King Middle Earth Fanfiction Award
Frodo awakens at Cormallen to discover that Gandalf is still alive... and so is he. With Frodo caught between joy and shock, Aragorn and Gandalf ponder what has been won -- and what may have been lost.

Keep Him Secret, Keep Him Safe
Aragorn falls ill at Cormallen, which Éomer feels must be kept a secret. But there is more to this illness than meets the eye, as Frodo discovers. My usual h/cccc, very hobbity, mostly book verse. Characters include Elladan and Elrohir.

Reunion at Cormallen
Frodo and Sam's first night awake at Cormallen, and an unexpected adventure with the Fellowship at Henneth Annun. A gentle, lighthearted (and very informal) tale, which includes tipsy hobbits, an embarrassed King, and a very special Tookish song.

Seven Stones and Seven Stars and One White Treet
The approaching Fourth Age is sensed through three very different points of view. Three mini-chapters; book-verse.

Reunion in Minas Tirith
Faramir and the hobbits reunite in Minas Tirith after Aragorn's crowning. An upbeat, lighthearted look at a very special reunion and some Faramir/hobbit interactions in the following days.

The Three Towers Middle Earth Fanfiction Award
A visit to the Tower of Ecthelion in Minas Tirith compels Frodo to return to the Tower of Cirith Ungol, accompanied by the King and the remaining members of the Fellowship. While Frodo struggles to recover lost or unclear memories, many of his companions find themselves making discoveries they did not expect. This story is based in book-verse, with bits of movie-verse interwoven at the author's discretion. Angst/drama, but with enough hobbity lightness to balance things out.

Can You Sing, Master Hobbit?
A short, silly ficlet written for Baylor's birthday (and originally posted on LiveJournal). When he's offered a recording contract in Gondor, why should Pippin return to the Shire? Starring Pippin, Merry, Frodo, and Sam.

Making It Right
The hobbits are dismayed to learn that something very important had been omitted from Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, so they work feverishly to remedy the situation. A short, hobbity ficlet set in Minas Tirith.

Silent Knight
After the Coronation, Pippin falls ill. Aragorn's visit to the young hobbit's sickroom results in a conversation in which Pippin learns something new about the King, and realizes a very special bond they share.

A Minor Misunderstanding
Frodo, Merry, Pippin, and Sam observe a popular game played in Minas Tirith. Assuming that Men possess the same natural abilities as Hobbits, they draw their own conclusions about the players -- and the rules of the game. Written for the Waymeet "The Sporting Life" challenge on Livejournal.

A Rohan Tapestry Photobucket
A mighty host accompanies Theoden King to his final rest, giving the hobbits a chance to see Eomer's kingdom... and help Merry through his grief. Mostly book-verse.

The Kings of the Golden Hall
An unexpected encounter between the Ring-bearer and King Eomer in one of the courtyards of Meduseld inspires a bittersweet conversation between Eomer, Aragorn... and Sam. (vignette)

Guarding the Shire
On the way home after the War, Aragorn and Gandalf answer Merry's question about why the Rangers were guarding the Shire for so long. (vignette)

Mind to Mind - PG Golden Mushroom Awards 2004 winner Middle Earth Fanfiction Award
Frodo begins sensing the thoughts of the bearers of the three Elven rings. When an accident injures Pippin and Elladan, and traps Frodo and Merry with Saruman and Grima, will this new ability help or hurt? AU post-quest story, also starring Elrohir, Elrond, Celeborn, Gandalf, Sam, and Galadriel.

Return to Rivendell - PG
The hobbits return to Rivendell on their way back to the Shire, one day before Frodo and Bilbo's birthdays. The two weeks they spend there are ones of angst, healing, celebrations, and revelations. Why was Sam permitted to sail West? Would Arwen's pendant help anyone besides Frodo? What really happened when Pippin looked into the Palantir? And much, much more...

And the Stars Will Sing Your Name
A short scene between Frodo and Elrond after the hobbits return to Rivendell. Frodo wonders if, as the years pass, any of their deeds will be remembered... but Elrond has his own reasons for knowing that nothing will be forgotten. Glorfindel has a cameo role.

Light Out of Darkness
A series of chapters that share a common theme: a comforting experience of Light shared by Frodo and one other person. Post-quest and mostly book-verse.

Into the West

Belts of Silver, Leaves of Gold
When Merry and Pippin were taken by the Orcs, their packs and gear were left behind at Parth Galen. A few years later a box arrives for them from Gondor, full of bittersweet memories.

Sing Me Home
How did Arwen know that Frodo could sail West? How did Cirdan help Frodo in his decision? What happens when the bent Seas are left behind and the Straight Road begins? Frodo leaves Middle-earth -- and finds joy and peace.

The Path to Healing
In Minas Tirith, Arwen told Frodo "you may pass into the West, until all your wounds and weariness are healed" (ROTK, "Many Partings"). Once Frodo reaches Tol Eressea, what wounds will be healed? How? And what do the Elves of the Lonely Isle think about the first mortals ever to live there?

What Every Parent Knows
On Tol Eressea, Frodo discovers the joys and frustrations of 'parenthood' -- as he learns the loving yet mischievous ways of an ever-growing family of geese. Featuring Frodo, Sam, and Gandalf. Short and fluffy.

Healed
Mortals are permitted to sail West -- on one condition. An unusual -- but very happy -- reunion in the West for Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Characters include Celebrian, Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel. Very AU.

Tales from Tol Eressea
Short, gentle ficlets about the hobbits’ possible experiences in the West. Some chapters will be linked together, and some will be stand-alone scenes.

"Patience with Patients" (2004): Celeborn may not have considered Gandalf to be the most cooperative of patients after Gwaihir brought the wizard to Lorien to heal after the Balrog battle. "The Truth Comes Out" (2006): Frodo awakens in Minas Tirith to... a startling revelation. "Smooth Sailing" (2006): Ah, those wacky Grey Havens...

Seeing Isn't Always Believing
A series of short ficlets originally posted in my LiveJournal. Most of these are very gentle and sweet Frodo hurt/comfort.

Wingfic!
Wingfics, stories in which one or more characters have wings, were a brief-but-fun craze in LOTR fanfiction several years ago. Here are two teensy, related scenes. Part One takes place in Moria, and Part Two in Cormallen.
